Understanding child allergies and intolerances

There are around two million school-age children suffer from a food allergy and one in twenty of all children under the age of three shows also signs of an allergy to food.

The symptoms of allergies are experienced when histamine is released. That takes place when a child of a food a food exposed LgE - allergy antibodies, have developed which you. Before this can happen, that child must have been through breast milk from his mother already exposed to the food, but this can. Then this is reflected in one of many ways, respiratory, skin, the digestive system or the cardio vascular system.

It is believed by Leonard Brook Aryan, MD, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Washington University School of medicine in St Louis, which well might the age where you wean your baby on solids, be a decisive factor for the presence of allergies in the life of the child. The risk of allergic reactions have been shown to be increased, if babies before the age of 4 to 6 months on solids. The opportunities are also increased, if both parents are suffering from allergic reactions - not food, but also pollen, and so on.

Weaning your baby on solid foods is something that should be done slowly and carefully - especially if there is a history of allergy in the family. Foods that are known to carry a risk of allergic reactions, such as such as nuts, should be introduced at least late preferably at the stages of weaning - up to the age of two years.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends:

After a year: Cow MilkAfter 2 years: EggsAfter 3 years: fish, shellfish, peanuts and nuts. Include nuts: walnuts, Pecans, pistachios, Brazil nuts, cashew nuts, almonds and coconuts (which are most common, but this is not a comprehensive list)

The only way to be sure, an allergic reaction is to avoid it, not to avoid the food, and although this sounds simple, in a culture where we many prefabricated and processed food to eat, this can be a difficult task. See, which spend much time reading food labels, as many processed foods, peanuts, milk, eggs, etc. are included. Read it carefully as not always is clear. The concepts of casein and albumin show the presence of milk or eggs for example. We have the situation where cross-contamination can occur when to produce the production line in cookies, are not marked facility for products, such as cookies, which included used nuts and is then modified with nuts. It is simple, cross-contamination to occur and if you are you suffering with a severe allergy can be found, that this enough to influence you.

The situation is more difficult when you have to do with children, as they are obviously not in a position, decisions about what food with the same precision as parents to meet. For this reason, your allergies should be clearly informed school, day care center, employees, friends parents and, in fact, every adult has the regular contact with you.

You can never be too careful with a child with an allergy, and it is up to parents to ensure that all steps to reduce the risk of problems are taken. Well marked allergy identification bracelets are a good idea.

Sensitivity to many foods can reduce as your child grows up. This is often the case when it comes to milk and eggs, but not nuts, fish and shellfish. These tend to keep around for life.
