How to Take Care of Your Pet Gerbil

Since gerbils are desert creatures, they are the cleanest animals because they do not produce as much waste and not drink as much as they do not feel as much as other rodents. This means that the gerbils are generally easy to maintain compared to some other animals and are neither nocturnal nor diurnal much as they sleep / wake cycles. These animals live brilliant three years on average so make sure you're ready to take responsibility for their entire life.

In order to properly care for your gerbils, you should start with the essential basics:

A Cage
Water and Food
Exercise
Bath
Chew toys

Gerbil Cage

A gerbil cage should not be less than 5 gallons per gerbil, so they prefer to come in pairs your gerbil cage should be not less than 10 gallons (preferably more). A glass aquarium is the most recommended type of cage but if you choose this type of accommodation to ensure that it has a mesh cover. If you treat your gerbil cage as their home, you can add sections of the cage per room, for example, the kitchen should include their food and water area etc. As gerbils are cleaner than most rodents, you will clean the cage at least once every two weeks.

Water and Food

These animals tend not to drink as much as others but you need to make sure they always have access to clean water and fresh with a bottle of water glass. The food you will need to provide is general Pet Shop gerbil food as they realize the nutrients your pet needs and include them in all their food. Do not add to their food if there are still some left, as they generally tend to choose their favorite foods ergo not giving them all their nutrients. You can add fruit to their diet and supply odd nut but do not over feed them - the provision of food in a ceramic bowl gerbil ideally solid food.

Exercise

In your gerbil's cage you do not need to provide some form of exercise as a wheel or a healthy alternative. In addition, out of their cage once a day for a run, allowing them to feel more comfortable around you.

Bath

As they are generally sand and animals they need to stay clean, bathing them in gerbil or chinchilla dust is essential - do not use water to bathe. Give them a bath at least once a week through the dust in a ceramic bowl and letting them roll in to clean. If you leave the bowl too long they can use it as a litter box.

Chew toys

It is extremely important that you provide your gerbil with chew toys that, like most rodents, their teeth grow constantly so providing a safe chew toy to keep their teeth in a good size is a critical set.

Gerbils are very social animals and are much better in pairs, although you can get the gerbils alone. Ensure that care for them properly and if you do not think you have time to care for them please do not adopt one. As these wonderful creatures can live up to five years, it is important that they have a long and happy life.
